Ana M. Viamonte Ros, M.D., was Florida’s first State Surgeon General and the first woman and Cuban-American to serve as head of the Florida Department of Health from 2007-11. She was charged by Governor Crist to act as the state’s leading advocate for wellness and disease prevention.
Dr. Viamonte Ros’ primary responsibility was to oversee one of the nation’s most comprehensive and complex public healthcare delivery systems and Florida’s largest single clinical enterprise. Approximately 20,000 employees serve in Florida’s 67 counties, with more than 300 clinical delivery sites.
Currently Director of Physician Relations for Baptist Health South Florida (BHSF), she is responsible for BHSF’s international physician relations program; the international business development of Doctor to Doctor and Medical Institution Affiliations Programs; the development and operations of Tele-Medicine, Second Opinion and C.M.E. programs for international physicians; and the creation of new business originating in Latin America and the Caribbean.
She is currently an associate professor in the Department of Humanities Health and Society at the HERBERT WERTHEIM COLLEGE OF MEDICINE, FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY (FIU) and professional development academic director with responsibility for teaching, evaluating curricula and improving academic programming at an institution whose vision centers on leadership in developing physicians to work in communities and discover innovations in the science of medicine and delivery of patient care.
Dr. Viamonte Ros graduated from the University of Miami Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health. Her commitment to the community includes serving as a Board member on the Camillus Health Concern and volunteering on numerous medical mission trips with “Health Through Walls” throughout the Caribbean.
